The F-List Is on Spotify

Back in July 2020 I became an ambassador for an initiative called The F-List for Music founded by Vick Bain who has campaigned tirelessly for equality, diversity and inclusion in the creative industries. The F-List is an online directory of over 5,000 female and gender minority musicians, songwriters, composers, DJs, producers, groups with women in them and music companies representing women, across all musical genres.

The thing about The F-List is that it’s more than a directory. It’s currently developing a range of initiatives to dismantle structural barriers that prevent women from progressing and thriving in the music industry and ensure that a 50/50 gender split becomes the norm across every festival and event in the UK.

“The music industry is supposed to be egalitarian, cool, open-minded, really diverse, all of these things that the creative industries or creative people tell about themselves. And yet, when you look at the statistics, this industry discriminates against women even more than the construction industry. The percentage of women working in the construction industry is 14%. The percentage of women signed as writers to music publishers is 14%. It’s crazy!”

Vick Bain, Founder of The F-List Music CIC and former CEO of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (now The Ivors Academy of Music Creators)

Fast forward a couple of months since its launch in November 2020, and I now curate the Spotify Monthly F-List Playlist! We’ve just announced our third playlist and this time it’s jazz! It’s a five-hour exploration of some of the most incredible jazz music composed or performed by women in the UK scene curated together with F-List director and jazz specialist Amy Pearce.

We intend to regularly produce these playlists, each time with a different genre or theme - if you’re on The F-List, let us know if you want to be featured. You can also send me a link to your music.
